Leasing Continued
Our leases offer a great opportunity to learn on well-trained, versatile, family show horses at a reasonable cost and small commitment at a beautiful facility with a fun and friendly environment and allows us to also focus training on other horses in our barn. JAG Arabian Sport Horses has 40 acres available for hacking/trail riding & hillwork and a covered arena and outdoor arena - both with lights and sprinkler systems. Rain or shine, you will be able to ride your lease horse. Our leases are a wonderful way to get LOTS of one-on-one time with a horse - almost as if they were your own! Please do not hesitate to reach out to us in regards to availability or any questions you may have! Short term 3 month leases are available as well as long term options. SHOWING IS NOT REQUIRED with our leases. Whether you want to enjoy more riding & horse time or are eager to get serious riding again, our top priority is to find the right match for horse and rider. Please do not hesitate to ask about our discount options listed below.
We are looking for intermediate or higher rider that can maintain their level of training. Preferably seeking a solid training level dressage rider (or equivalent level of hunter/eventer/western dressage rider) capable of asking a horse to do the following:
- Free walk
- Square Halts
- Stretchy trot
- Trot-halt-trot
- Walk, trot, canter, walk to canter transitions
- Circles
- Serpentines
- Correctly ask for leads
- Half halt and utilize leg & seat aids
- With first level knowledge [knowledge of leg yields, extended trot & canter, shoulder fore/shoulder in, rein back, and turn around the forehand or haunches]. Minimum basics of lateral work for the benefit of the horse and rider.
- Walk ground poles and trot ground poles
- Safely hack/trail ride outside of the arena
All horses can hack around on light contact for hunter or can collect up for dressage, enjoy attention and groom time, and trail rides or hill work around the farm as well as cavalletti and ground pole work!
Our biggest hope with lessees is that they develop a good relationship with a trainer (of lessee's choice based on approved list and open to other trainers upon approval) to learn, ask questions and work on correct exercises in and outside the arena to benefit horse and rider. We are looking for riders who can ride safely, independently, and confidently. We are BIG on cross training - so that means hacking the hills, trail riding, dressage type flat work exercises, lateral work and ground pole/cavaletti/low gymnastics work so it's fun for both horse and rider and creates good habits and correct muscle development in both horse and rider for long term physical and mental health. We are also proponents of treating horses (and riders) as the athletes they are. Leases allow us to focus on our other horses scheduled to attend upcoming shows/events/trail rides. This helps keep the ones that are not in a current show/training program stay in at least light condition and offers lessees an incredible opportunity to enjoy, spend time with and learn on a well trained horse at our beautiful farm. Again, our leases are an excellent way to get LOTS of one-on-one time with a horse - almost as if they were your own!
All horses have packed around beginners as well as been schooled by upper level professionals over their lifetimes and enjoy being loved on.

INCLUDES:
-
Board
-
Use of Facilities
-
Ride Time
-
Farrier work - trim as needed per horse every 4-7 weeks.
-
Chiropractic work - mandatory, at minimum, every 12 weeks. First session must be done within first 30 days of lease.
-
PEMF therapy - once a month, OR exchanged with massage OR BOTH depending on horse's needs.
-
Above is needed to maintain a happy, healthy athlete (based on recommendation of vet, trainer or owner & rider evaluation of horse's physical requirements).
-
If Acupuncture is needed at recommendation of vet or trainer there is an ADDITIONAL COST of $125.00 plus farm call
-
-
Typical vet work (typical is coggins, shots, dental work).
EXCLUDES (Lessee MUST provide):
-
Off site vet care due to use of horse by lessee. Depending on training and competition desires, we HIGHLY recommend horse insurance for off site emergencies when leaving the property for clinics, schooling sessions or horse shows. Insurance will be required if the horse is to compete or school cross country or participate in a trail ride, hunter pace or field hunt without the attendance & supervision of owner. All vet care decisions should be made in coordination between horse owner and vet and not strictly between lessee and vet. Owner should be informed immediately of any medical needs and treatment.
-
If a horse is injured during your ride or time with them, you are responsible for the vet care/bill.
-
Adequan or Pentosan (depends on individual horse) every six months or once a year. Will have to pay vet or a trainer to administer.
-
Previcox/Equioxx for horse in hard work per vet recommendation.
-
Legend for horse in hard work per vet recommendation prior to big event - competition, clinic, etc.
-
Shoes, if needed for individual horse. Please talk to us for those who may need this. Also dependent on horse's workload. Alternative would be hoof boots for use only as needed during work sessions.
-
In addition to above if recommended by vet or nutritionist: daily joint and/or muscle supplements depending on specific horse's needs and work load. A horse in a hard work program may need additional Vitamin E or amino acids or MSM. Supplements MUST be started within first week or two of lease (within 7-14 days MAXIMUM) or when work load significantly increases.
-
Probiotics or ulcer preventatives if horse is in a hard work program and/or requires gut health/care products.
-
Electrolytes or additional plain salt as needed for horse offsite - may be especially useful during drastic weather changes, in the days leading up to horse shows, hauling off site, trail rides, & long clinics & lessons.
-
UlcerGard preventative and hindgut support (like Probiotics and Sucralfate) for horse shows, trail rides, clinics or trailer rides (as needed). www.abler.com has some very reasonable prices!
-
Trace or body clipping (if necessary), mane pulling, etc. Appropriate blankets must be purchased and provided by lessee if the horse is body clipped and does not already have the blankets needed. Blanketing fee for a partial body or fully body clipped horse is an additional $30 per month for spring/summer (warm weather - fly/UV sheet only) and $50 per month for winter/fall (cold weather).
-
Saddlefit Evaluation - minimum once a year. Additional times as recommended by your trainer or as the horse physically changes.
-
Lesson fee, out of state Health Certificate if hauling horse out of state, and, if competing, any related fees and show/trailer/coaching fees, to be paid directly to supplier.
-
Wound care treatment and other common topical medications for onsite use.
-
Complete First Aid Kit for off site needs. Please pack your horse first aid kit for off site hauling
-
Misc. required horse and rider products and equipment (see below)
-
If Acupuncture is needed at recommendation of vet or trainer there is an ADDITIONAL COST of $125.00 plus farm call. Ask vet as there may be discount for 3 treatments purchased in advance for the same horse.
-
If horse is not on same vet/chiropractic/massage/PEMF treatment schedule as the rest of the barn, lessee or trainer must go to farm to catch the horse if not in a stall/pen and hold for the vet/therapist/practitioner (as required per individual professional's preferences) or there will be an additional holding fee. Please note that these individuals schedules are often busy and the appointment times will have to depend on the professional(s) schedule. Depending on the appointment, you will have to arrange your riding schedule to fit these appointments in. Most appointments need to be arranged 2-3 weeks in advance, some may need 4 weeks notice. Horse will be require to have 24 hours off from work after a massage, PEMF or chiro session.
-
As mentioned previously, if you are doing hard work or working on difficult footing and you would personally prefer to put BOOTS (rather than paying for shoes) on your horse while maintaining all the benefits of keeping the horse barefoot the other 23 hours of the day you aren't working them, you are welcome to order some and use them during your work sessions on those particular surfaces. It is your responsibility to order correct brand and sizing depending on your preference. Farrier can also make recommendations and help take measurements for proper sizing and fit.
If horse is half or partial leased by two individuals some of these costs can and should be split by lessees.
Lessee needs to provide the following:
Unless otherwise arranged, lessee provides their own:
-
Saddle that properly fits horse per saddle fitter (if you don't have your own saddle you can talk to us about renting one of ours)
-
Saddle Pad
-
Half Pad (depending on horse leasing and saddle fit recommendations)
-

-
Properly fitting ASTM/SEI Helmet for rider that is no older than 5 years old
-
Other Personal Riding Attire for rider

All Cleaning and Conditioning Products for Horse and Tack

Ice Boots, Liniment and/or Poultice for use after lessons, intense schooling sessions or trail rides, or after competition. Good options to have in addition to cold hosing your horse. Grooming products, brushes, hoof pick, curry combs, etc.
-
Fly Spray
-
Coat Conditioner
-
Sunscreen - especially for white noses
-
Detangling product for tails and manes
-

-
Soaps, conditioners, sponges, scrub brushes, etc. for bathing needs
-
Anti-itch or Anti-fungal sprays, products, or soaps - Kinetic Vet has a fantastic line of products!
-
Towel or Coolers
-
Additional products as needed and if showing
-
Ulcergard when traveling off site/hauling. Abler.com also has some good options.
-
Complete First Aid Kit (especially for off site needs)
-
Standing wraps, quick standing wraps, Equisleeves, or something similar for use at horse shows or hauling offsite, depending on season & individual horse needs.
-
Bell boots for hauling, if needed
-
Proper protective equipment, as needed, for horse and rider for jumping, cross country schooling or tougher hill work/hacking. We recommend ARMA breathable mesh boots or a similar mesh boot by LeMieux, Husk or Eskadron to reduce potential of overheating of the tendons. If you choose to use boots, please cold hose horse's legs after use, especially during warm weather.
-
Electrolytes (treat form is easiest) or salt (if hauling off site)
-
Probiotics or ulcer preventatives if horse is in a hard work program and/or requires gut health/care products
-
Fly Sheet - if body clipped. You will be responsible for taking on and off dependent on weather or pay additional blanketing fee per month.
We can recommend our favorite products for all of the above. If you don't want to buy products individually we can put together our recommended items in a package for an additional cost. Please inquire for a current price quote and let us know what you would like to have included. Payment due in advance and there will be no refunds. Please note once items are ordered, ship time will vary per item.
Once a month (or more), during warm and humid weather, the lessee is required to bathe the entire horse thoroughly (two times scrubbed well with soap is best!) to prevent sweat, mud or dirt build up. Horsemanship is VERY important so be certain your tack stays clean and in good repair and that your horse is taken care of properly before and after riding. This means the horse must be properly warmed up and cooled out, rinsed off if hot/warm, curried, brushed, feet picked, then followed by coat conditioner over the entire body and tail, Show Sheen or coconut oil in tail and, if needed, Keratex hoof gel, fly spray, any treatment for cuts, etc.. Lessee is responsible for cleaning and maintaining tack or any equipment daily as a part of good horsemanship and in respect to the horse's comfort as an athlete.
Also Included in the Lease:
Lessee is provided with:
-
Halter
-
Lead Rope
-
Winter waterproof blanket
-
Please note half sheets, stable sheets, and quarter sheets may be provided dependent on availability. Please purchase for offsite clinic or show use unless discussed otherwise. Anything provided to lessee and then broken will be replaced at cost of lessee and must be replaced in an extremely timely manner. Please keep in mind by allowing you to borrow items such as coolers, etc. we expect them to be cleaned and handled properly and treated as if they are your own. If you would like to borrow something, please ASK and please wash it following the item's specific directions. Show ONLY items should not be used for daily use or regular schooling. Dover Saddlery, Atlanta Saddlery, Snooty Fox Tack Exchange, and Tractor Supply are local resources you can go to for equipment & products. There are also a variety of online resources that provide great deals and sales on products that we can assist with recommending. You can also find some wonderful products used or on sale as needed! No need to purchase at full price. :)
Required Lessons
All onsite leases must have a weekly lesson with approved trainer(s). Please ask us for current approved trainer list. MINIMUM 2 DRESSAGE/FLAT WORK LESSONS PER MONTH WITH DRESSAGE SPECIFIC TRAINER. If you have lessons with Charlotte Osborne, this requirement can be waived - you can have 4 jumping lessons per month as she incorporates excellent flatwork exercises every single lesson. More lessons are certainly welcomed over the minimum 4. This is to be certain both rider and horse are working and growing together as a team AND so that rider has a consistent mentor.
Having a professional equestrian supervise our lessees at minimum once a week also ensures our family members (our horses) are happy and are being ridden/worked in a correct manner that is in their best interest as a happy and healthy individual and athlete and helps to make sure the horse & rider are growing together as a team. Please note: No one 18 years old or younger may be at the barn without prior approval, signed waiver by guardian e-mailed in advance, and direct parental supervision. This means the parent cannot be riding without the youth being supervised by another adult.
We encourage cross training, time outside the arena walking the hills (highly recommend couple times a month, or a couple times weekly, as weather & footing permits), along with both dressage and ground pole/cavaletti exercises in the arena. We attend local GHJA and GDCTA shows along with rated AHA & USDF shows if you are interested in competing. Showing is NOT required; however, may be a good option to discuss with your trainer as an opportunity to test your skills.

If you feel as though this is a good match...
You will review the sample contract, essentially states the above details and common sense horsemanship requirements. Please click here to see a sample contract. This is just a sample contract, which we can discuss and make edits to. Next, please send a reference letter or an in-hand, lunging, or riding video, then we will send you upcoming available dates to schedule an appointment time to visit the farm. A signed liability waiver will be required to be e-mailed before arrival to farm for all visitors. Potential lessee will also meet, groom, and spend time on the ground with the potential lease horse and learn which tack they use. We do HIGHLY recommend doing a trial run through the free riding opportunity (walk-trot only) for about 2-3 weeks as our top goal is to be certain horse and rider are off to a great start developing a close partnership before the financial commitment of a lease.
If potential lessee feels as though the horse and facilities may be a wonderful fit and does not want to participate in the free rial option through the free riding opportunity, there is a $25 fee for a test ride (use of horse) plus a lesson fee to Julie Cochran, Charlotte Osborne, Michael Ippolito, Kimberly Schisler Sosebee, or other approved trainer to ensure you start off with learning good communication with your future teammate no matter your goals or skill level. Again, participating in our free riding opportunity (see below) allows you to build a relationship before committing to a lease and allows you to have at least one lesson (if not more) with the approved trainer(s) you likely will be working with during the lease.
The trial ride would include one-on-one instruction with approved trainer and typically last 30 minutes, depending on fitness of horse and rider. If you would like to learn even more about your selected trainer(s) after reviewing our approved trainer list, please contact them directly to preview other lessons before trial rides if you would like. Charlotte, Julie, Michael and Kim are all phenomenal. Please wait to mount until the approved trainer is present as this will be the first time riding the potential lease horse and we want to be certain safety is top priority. The trainer can also ensure there will no be any last minute tack adjustments needed and can work the horse through a correct warm up. Megan, Jessica and/or Kathy must be present for your trial ride and we are more than happy to answer questions and help as needed. Potential lessee will be expected to arrive 30 minutes prior to scheduled trial/test ride to catch, groom and tack up the potential lease horse and must allow minimum 30-45 minutes after the ride to cool down, groom (and/or rinse off) and clean up after your ride. Rider must dress in safe riding attire and have a properly fitting ASTM/SEI approved helmet or will not be permitted to ride. Full payment of lesson cost and test ride (use of horse) fee is due either prior to ride or immediately after. If you cancel the trial/test ride last minute, we cannot guarantee the option to re-schedule so please schedule with respect to everyone's time involved.
(Please note anyone under 18 can only be at the farm under supervision of their approved trainer or parent/guardian at all times due to insurance reasons.)
Ready to Lease?
If potential lessee and lessor feel as though the horse and farm are an excellent match, both parties will sign the monthly lease agreement. There is a minimum 3 month commitment. For the first week, all rides will be supervised (either by an approved trainer(s) or Kathy, Jessica, or Megan) to be certain horse and rider are starting off as a wonderful team and to answer any questions that may come up. The rides won't necessarily be directly supervised, but we just want to be readily available just in case. After that lessee will ride at their leisure and schedule lessons weekly with their selected and approved trainer(s). Chiropractic, farrier, regular vet, and PEMF (or massage) appointments will typically be scheduled by Kathy or Megan and you will be notified when these are scheduled on a routine basis so you can plan you schedule as well.
Free Riding Opportunity (Walk & Trot ONLY - Trotting only if horse is in shape)
If you are an intermediate or above rider you may be interested in our Free Riding Opportunity. Intermediate is defined as understanding and having the ability to apply the concepts of half halt, leg and seat aids, walk leg yield, free walk, rein back, walk shoulder-fore/shoulder-in, walk & trot poles, basic foundation of walk turn around the forehand or turn on the haunches (one to two steps is a great start!), basic application of leg yield and shoulder fore at the walk and/or trot, and is balanced and confident at the trot and canter. If you need a refresher on these exercises or concepts, please consider brushing up from our highly recommend list of resources here. We are also more than happy to recommend upcoming clinics to audit.
Our free riding opportunity horses are show horses with Regional and/or National Titles (JAG Royal Knight, CA Destiny Gro+ "Des", JAG Kalico Kid+//). Other horses may be available dependent on availability and rider experience level. This is a wonderful opportunity for an intermediate or above rider who does not have the budget for a lease or the time for full horse ownership to get riding time in a relaxed environment with well trained and proven show horses. Also, for those looking to improve their skills under the direction of a professional, you can have lessons at our beautiful 40 acre farm with one of our recommended trainers while not paying for a lease. Please note free riding participants may not get to select their riding horse as it will depend on what horse is available and is best suited for their riding ability/type, but we will do our best to match you with the horse you most prefer. Priority will be given to those who have scheduled lessons with one of our recommended professionals.
Please see the "Frequently Asked Questions" page for more details as well.
If someone really improves and puts 110% into the care and attention of the horse, we are happy to discuss other opportunities if there's ever any interest in cantering. This means that you consistently show a passion for the horses and learning, practice good horsemanship, follow directions, are attentive to your horse's needs over a period of months so that we know we can have confidence in you with the horses and you have shown us you deserve more opportunities to grow as an equestrian. If you are interested in cantering during our free riding opportunity please contact us for more details. You will be required to send a reference letter and riding video to canter our horses. Our horses are happy to live the easy pasture life while not in training or campaigning with us, but we love giving fellow equestrians the opportunity to ride and enjoy them! The horses truly enjoy the extra love and attention before and after their rides. This is also a great option to get to know our horses in a low-key setting before choosing to lease. The free riding opportunity does not cover additional maintenance for hard work so the Free Riding Opportunity would be for light hacking (walk & trot), ground pole work, light lessons, & hacking the hills dependent on the horse's current level of fitness. For the horse to be WTC, doing advanced work or jumping they must be in a 3 day a week work program and preventative maintenance program, which does not incorporate the free riding opportunity options. For those interested in this we recommend our Leasing options (listed at the top of this page).
Please note: Any rider that wants to trot on our horses must be able to confidently ask the horse for a free walk, leg yield at the walk, basic ground pole exercises at the walk, walk serpentine, walk squares, figure eight, rein back, prompt walk-halt-walk transitions, baby beginning steps of turn on the haunches, and the basics of a shoulder fore/shoulder in at the walk. This ensures you are able to safely & independently guide and communicate with a horse at a faster gait. If you do not know how to do these exercises and would like to trot, please make sure you schedule a lesson on our horse(s) or learn how to do so by auditing clinics, reading books & articles, watching videos online, etc. We can recommend some excellent, free online resources & low cost book or clinics for those eager to learn more!
Good horsemanship and safety is our top priority. We always keep in mind that horses and equestrians are athletes! These guidelines and barn rules are in place to ensure safety and health of the horse & equestrian, otherwise an injury or medical issue as a result of the rider's actions or while under the supervision of rider (example: severe cuts during trail rides, lameness after an unnecessary/unsuitable strenuous work out, etc.), the rider will take on the entirety of the expenses for the needed emergency veterinary care.
This is listed on our detailed Free Riding Opportunity FAQ sheet, but for emphasis these are the requirements in order to ride a horse in the Free Riding Opportunity program & keeping good horsemanship in mind as well as treating our horses like the athletes they are:
-
Clean & pick out the horse’s pen or stall you ride
-
Thoroughly groom & curry comb horse before & after ride. After ride follow with anti-fly spray (in spring, summer, fall), coat conditioner, ShowSheen, coconut oil, sunscreen (if needed), Keratex Hoof Gel (if needed), and use Vetricyn or SWAT (if needed).
-
Thoroughly bathe the horse or wash tail, face & legs to remove sweat & dirt build up (dependent on weather & time of year). In hot weather, the horse MUST be rinsed off to remove sweat and cool off horse after each work out.
-
Cold hose, liniment, poultice, and/or ice boots on the horse, as needed, after the ride (dependent on weather & time of year)
-
Carefully use the tail pull stretch exercise after the ride, belly lifts or any other beneficial or needed stretches depending on the individual horse's needs, including baited stretches
-
Pull mane or clip (if needed or asked to)
-
Thoroughly clean and condition saddle, bridle, leather girth & leather halter & rinse, wash, brush and/or wipe off syntethic girth, saddle pad & sport boots and any other borrowed equipment after use. You are welcome to bring own bridle, saddle, wraps, saddle pad, girth, etc. if you do not want to clean ours as long as they are in good condition, fit properly, and the horse is comfortable and happy in your tack and equipment.
-
Fill up water bucket if needed (dump out if dirty, rinse out or scrub clean as needed and refill). Turn off water and store hose and/or in freezing temperatures allow to drain downhill on a slow drip
-
Organize, dust, sweep, clean up, etc. the areas you used before you leave
-
Clean up after you & your horse, whether that’s in the arena, hallway, walkway, or wash rack
-
Put away any ground poles or cavaletti used so the arenas can be dragged daily
-
Close gates and put away and organize anything that you use or borrow, that means returning manure forks, brooms, lead ropes, halters, etc. back to where they are to be stored to keep the barn safe and organized
Please see the "Frequently Asked Questions" page for more details.
Again, all rides will be under supervision of Megan or Jessica. That means before or after work M-F, depending on the season, or on weekends. Please note no one is permitted at the barn without an owner present with the exception of individuals under a lease or boarding contract or a service provider due to insurance restrictions. This means you are only permitted at the farm with a scheduled appointment with Megan OR Jessica. If you want to ride at your leisure during barn hours, please refer to the above lease options. Every individual on site must have a Liability Release Form signed with either JAG Arabian Sport Horses or Julie Cochran Dressage before arrival to the barn.
Paid Riding Opportunity (Walk & Trot ONLY - Trotting only if horse is in shape)
If you are interested in riding our horses and are an intermediate or above rider, but don't have time to do the Free Riding Opportunity or lease at this time, consider this option of the Paid Riding Opportunity.
You can ride either Knight, Des, or Kid (all have Regional and/or National titles in the hunter or dressage ring) maximum twice a week at a usage fee of $35 per ride if we are supervising the ride (intermediate or above riders) or $25 if an approved professional is supervising your ride with the horse for maximum of light work 25-45 minutes. All rides must be supervised in the paid riding opportunity. Other horses may be available dependent on availability and rider experience level. This option still requires you to take care of the tack & horse before & after the ride as good horsemanship is still required; however, this would deduct stall cleaning from the requirement. This is also a great option for those that simply want more ride and horse time or for those to get to know our horses in a low-key setting before choosing to lease. Each horse may only be ridden maximum 2 times per week in Paid Riding Opportunity program; however, the rider may be able to ride up to 6-12 times per week depending on their riding experience level and if they had the time and wanted to.
Please note Paid Riding Opportunity participants will not get to select their riding horse as it will depend on what horse is available and is best suited for their riding ability/type, but we will do our best to match you with the horse you most prefer. Priority will be given to those who have scheduled lessons with one of our recommended professionals.
For the horse to be WTC, doing advanced work or jumping they must be in a 3 day a week work program and preventative maintenance program, which does not incorporate the paid riding opportunity option. If you are interested in this, please see our Leasing options above.
Please note: Any rider that wants to trot on our horses must be able to confidently ask the horse for a free walk, leg yield at the walk, basic ground pole exercises at the walk, serpentine, squares, figure eight, rein back, prompt walk-halt-walk transitions, turn around the forehand, baby beginning stages of turn on the haunches, and the basics of a shoulder fore/shoulder in at the walk.
